Basic description and review of the Canon EOS 30D Digital Camera

Key Features (Canon discontinued production in 2007)

  • 8.2 megapixels
  • high speed (5fps) and low speed (3fps) burst modes
  • 2.5 inch LCD display monitor
  • compatible with all EF and EF-S Lenses
  • lithium-ion battery pack
  • 5.7 x 4.2 x 2.9 inches in size
  • 1.5 lbs camera weight

The Canon EOS 30D is a midrange level SLR Digital Camera with several key design improvements over its predecessor the 20D. A bigger LCD screen and improved frame capacity are most noticeable however other features like the ability to use Canons wireless file transmitter (WFT-E1/E1A) for fast remote file transfers are not to be overlooked. Extremely useful in a studio environment.

Quality photos with speed: The EOS 30D boasts the award winning Canon CMOS sensor technology and provides a wide dynamic range with minimal noise. Built in noise elimination circuitry filters any remaining noise patters to provide sharp, crisp photographs. An infrared filter eliminates red fringing caused by sensor reflections. Canon’s DIGIC II processor is included to provide speed and image quality using complex colour rendition algorithms to clear the buffers quickly.

Direct printing. The EOS 30D can print photos directly from the camera and is compatible with Canon’s SELPHY compact printers, desktop PIXMA printers, and various third party PictBridge compatible printers.

EOS 30D Presets

  • Standard for stunning photos that don’t require post processing
  • Portrait for exceptional skin tones
  • Landscape for vivid colors and sharpening that render crisp edges to mountains, trees etc
  • Neutral for images you intend to process
  • Faithful to match subject colors under color temperatures of 5200K
  • Monochrome for black and white photography with filter options

Canon EOS 30D software: The latest Digital Photo Professional RAW image processing software, Canon EOS Solution Disk with remote capture software and the latest versions of ZoomBrowser, ImageBrowser and PhotoStitch are/were included.

Overall: The EOS 30D is a durable, fast shooting SLR digital camera that provides exceptional images and is easy enough to use for the amateur photographer. On those fronts Canon did an excelent job in engineering this popular model. The only knocks that I have heard repeatedly are that the multi controller tab isn’t as intuitive as one would like and that contrast capability feels a slightly low. MSRP was originaly in the 1400.00 range but as you can see below you can pick one up for about a third of that price now.
